Welcome to the Lancaster District Forest Friends project

The Forest Friends Project has now finished, we are no longer working in Carnforth Cemetery Wood, Higher Heysham Wood, Levens Drive Woods in Morecambe or Newton Beck Woods in Lancaster
We had hoped to re-start the project in September 2019, in the area around Lancaster Castle, but there has been no progress on this unfortunately

Over the summer we worked improving the footpaths, picking litter, repairing gates and fences, and keeping undergrowth trimmed back.We also organised extra community events. including Woodland Skills, and Art & Craft sessions. Our session leaders also led walks exploring the woodland ecology, identifying trees, plants, insects and fungi.

Over the winter months, when trees are dormant and birds aren't nesting, we will be coppicing and hedge-laying. Coppicing is the process of cutting down multi-stem trees, and single stem trees to develop as multi-stem ones. New stems grow from the stump, and the cutting can be repeated every 5-20 years almost indefinitely. Willow, sweet chestnut ash, hazel and oak are often managed as rotation coppice.
