History of Newton Beck woods
Before 1990, the area was believed to be used as rough grazing for horses. A Forestry Commission grant in the early 1990's enabled Lancaster City Council to plant up the woods, and create footpaths for better public access. With the beck in a sheltered valley , the woods attracted plenty of wildlife, and it was soon designated a County Biological Heritage site. However, the woods have also attracted anti-social behaviour by way of motorbike scrambling, and fly tipping. Since 2009 however, volunteers have improved the woodlands, including replacing the footbridge over Newton Beck in January 2017. However, heavy floods in November eroded around the bridge and it needs to be re-built. |
